DeAndre Jordan is still a Los Angeles Clipper, but with a better deal. And the shenanigans that got him back were the talk of Twitter Wednesday.
After initially verbally agreeing to sign with the Dallas Mavericks last week, DeAndre had a change of heart over the weekend. He called his buddy and teammate Blake Griffin, and they agreed he should let coach and GM Doc Rivers know how he felt. And that conversation Monday got the ball rolling. From there the Clippers organization (owner Steve Ballmer and Coach Rivers) gathered a few of their best guys including new team member Paul Pierce, Griffin, Chris Paul, and JJ Redick to pitch the dynamic center on staying with the team he’s been with his entire career.
The meeting happened in Jordan’s home in Houston, and apparently didn’t last very long. They hashed a few things out including the apparent strained relationship between Jordan and Paul, and got Jordan to agree to stay. But that is when things got really interesting.
In an effort to make sure the deal was done as soon as free agency signings could become official (12:01am ET Thursday), the Clippers contingent stayed at Jordan’s home for hours. At the same time, Jordan reportedly ignored call from Mavs owner Mark Cuban and his own agent Dan Fegan (a close friend of Cuban). And at 12:01am ET July 9th, DeAndre signed a four-year deal, with an option after year 3, worth $88 million.
