Phil Mickelson, an ASU alum (Go DEVILS), won his 3rd green jacket Sunday. Though this had been considered Tiger’s tournament to win, Mickelson did what he does best: play well at Augusta National. With his own personal drama going on with the struggles of his wife and mother with breast cancer, Mickelson played the first nine decent, and then got to the back 9 and upped his game. K.J. Choi who started the day with Tiger tied for third began the day playing as if he wanted this one, however in the back things quickly got away from him. And for the fourth straight day Choi and Woods finished the day, and the tournament tied.
The most emotional point of the day came when Mickelson finished up at the 18th and he then saw his wife and kids. Mickelson’s wife, Amy, who has been battling cancer for the last year had been resting at their rental house for the week and was unsure if she would make it to the course. But she decided she felt well enough, and once she realized he had a great chance of winning she wanted to make sure she was there. As one of the analysts stated when Phil sank the final putt, this was definitely “one for the family.”
